An appreciative audience gave the Georgian Bay Winds a standing ovation on Jan. 14 for their performance at the McKellar Sesquicentennial Committee’s "Kickoff Ceremony" for the Township of McKellar’s 150th Anniversary.
Under the direction of Stephen Maule, 30 band members played a variety of pieces representing the last 150 years to a full house. McKellar residents Perry Bell on tuba, Nancy Graham on saxophone, Debbie Woods on percussion and Deanna Jackson on flute were especially proud to be part of the ceremony. An audience member was overheard to exclaim, “What a great way to start the celebrations."
Deputy Mayor Kekkonen, on behalf of Mayor Moore and Council, welcomed all to the start of the Township’s year-long celebration followed by Vivian Moore, chair of the McKellar Historical Committee, who gave an enlightening history of the township.
Throughout the band’s performance, images of "Old McKellar" were displayed on the big screen bringing back memories to many.
Lingering long after the band finished, the community came together to enjoy some punch and James McMurdo cookies, to look at the historical displays including an interesting model of McKellar Village in the 50s by Rob Harvey.
While reminiscing and connecting with friends and neighbours, many were delighted by the colourful posters signed by adults and children showing their community support for the township's 150th.
