Get The Lead Out

Lead-Free Fishing Tackle Campaign

Loon Sustainability is More Fragile Than You Might Think

Anything we can do to improve the Loons' environment will help them beat the odds.  Disturbing the delicate balance they need could easily lead to their demise.

Fragile Life Cycle of a Loon

  • They only start breeding after 6-7 years of age
  • Mating pairs are now averaging half a chick per year
  • Loons need private wild spots to nest
  • Areas with large waves are very challenging for young loonlets
  • The Loons long life span of up to 20 years is a key to their survival

How Lead Gets
Into a Loon

  • Loons eat a fish with ingested or attached tackle
  • Loons grab your bait or fish from your fishing line - they are very aggressive
  • They scoop up lead sinkers on the lake bottom  when  gathering pebbles to aid in their digestion
