Moving toward using lead-free fishing tackle Environment Canada says that “an average Canadian angler can lose 11 to 15 jigs and sinkers per year while fishing due to snags and other reasons. This adds up to about 460 tonnes of lead jigs and sinkers lost every year into Canada’s lakes and waterways. This represents the most significant source of lead releases into Canadian waters. Lead is a highly toxic metal that can cause detrimental effects to the nervous and reproductive system in humans. With respect to wildlife, the ingestion of small lead fishing sinkers and jigs is a major cause of death in breeding Common Loons in Canada, often exceeding the death rate caused by trauma, disease and entanglement in fishing gear. Ingesting them can lead to blindness, muscle paralysis, reduced ability to reproduce, seizures and death. There are several viable non-lead sinkers and jigs available in the Canadian market. Anglers can use sinkers and jigs made from non-poisonous materials such as tin, bismuth, antimony, steel, brass, tungsten, terpene resin putty and polypropylene. These alternatives have minimal cost compared to overall fishing expenditures.”

Phragmites in McKellar
Time to Take Action
The Lake Stewardship and Environmental Committee (LSEC) and the Township of McKellar are looking for volunteers to help eradicate phragmites from the Township on land and in the waterways. Phragmites is a very successful invasive grass/plant (reed from Europe) that spreads easily and out-competes native plants. It has been the target of government and local eradication efforts in Ontario for the past few years.
The Township was successful in receiving a grant to establish a Phragmites Management Program for the Township of McKellar and is working with Generations Effect (Georgian Bay Biosphere) to help facilitate the work in creating this program and managing the phragmites sites we currently have.
People who are interested in volunteering to eradicate phragmites stands in McKellar Township are encouraged to email the LSEC at lsec.mckellar@gmail.com. You would be working alongside Township staff and GBB staff members. The phragmites removal will take place on July 27 & 28; and August 3 & 4.

Is Cardboard Safe for the Garden?
|
Carboard has been a popular material to smother weeds in gardens for a long time. It blocks light, oxygen, and rain more effectively than many inches of wood chips. Some people wonder, though: is it safe? Let’s set the most alarming rumours to rest:
Cardboard is full of lye: Lye is a natural product of the wood-pulping process, but what remains in cardboard is both safe and quickly broken down.
Cardboard contains PFAS: Truthfully, everything in our world does. Plants take these chemicals up from the environment, so trees contain them before their wood is even pulped. Unless cardboard is waterproofed, manufacturers aren’t adding them. Since mulching with cardboard requires less plant matter overall than mulching with wood chips or other materials does, the total amount of PFAS can ultimately be less.
You don’t know what’s in the ink or glue: We do! In standard non-glossy black-on-brown printed boxes, the ink is soy based and the glue is starch based.
To use cardboard safely, avoid glossy surfaces, colour inks, and any cardboard that’s been treated to be water resistant (you’ll know because water beads and rolls off it). Remove staples, tape, and labels…and enjoy some peace of mind!
