Reptiles play essential roles in healthy ecosystems. Turtles help keep wetlands clean by scavenging dead plants and animals, while snakes regulate rodent populations, reducing crop damage and the spread of disease. In Anishinaabek culture, snakes (gnebig) are respected as guides and protectors, closely connected to the land.

Many reptiles reproduce slowly. Some turtle species can take decades to replace a single adult female in the population. Even small increases in road mortality can have long-lasting impacts, especially in a region like ours, which is home to 12 species of reptiles at risk, including Eastern Foxsnakes and Blanding’s Turtles.

As you ready docks and water craft take a look at your shoreline. Natural shorelines are fundamental to securing and maintaining water quality. There should be a wide variety of vegetation to prevent erosion, filter nutrients like nitrogen, and provide critical habitat for insects (dragonflies eat mosquitoes), amphibians, reptiles, fish and birds.

Having suitable habitat on our lakes will provide for loons and foster successful nesting. The Great Blue Heron is standing along the edge because there are frogs and fish thriving in the cool water. The vegetation slows wave action buffeting the shoreline. We can each do our part to protect our lakes.
