Working For Seniors:
A 2026 Update for the Parry Sound District

by Scott Buckingham

June is Seniors Month in Ontario, a vital time to recognize the lifelong contributions of older adults who have built our province into the place it is today. While the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility continues its work to help seniors “Stay Safe, Active and Connected,” local efforts in the Parry Sound District have moved from initial collaboration to deep, data-driven action.

A May 29 session in McKellar was well attended by diverse groups in the district. The session dealt with our Local Reality, What We Have Learned, and The Path Forward: Taking Action.  Use the button below to read the full report.

This month, as we acknowledge the contributions of our seniors, we encourage everyone to visit 211 or review the local Health and Wellness Pathways to learn how we can all “Age with Confidence” in a community designed for all ages.

As we head into the busy season, we ask all residents and visitors to be considerate of those around them. Some of the most common neighbourhood concerns we receive involve excessive noise and dogs running at large.

A little courtesy goes a long way:

          • Keep noise levels reasonable at all hours of the day and night
          • Keep dogs leashed in all public spaces and under proper control
          • Clean up after pets

Whenever possible, we encourage neighbours to respectfully resolve concerns directly with one another first. In many cases, a simple conversation can prevent misunderstandings and quickly resolve issues.

If concerns cannot be resolved, Bylaw Services may be contacted for assistance with municipal bylaw matters.

          Please note:

          • Concerns involving dogs running at large or aggressive dogs must be directed to the OPP
          • Criminal matters, including trespassing concerns - handled by the OPP
          • Any life or safety threatening emergencies -  contact 911

We are fortunate to live in an area known for its natural beauty and strong sense of community. Let’s all do our part to help ensure everyone can safely and peacefully enjoy everything our community has to offer.
