Public Input Required

Enhanced wake boats are designed to create big waves for surfing. They’re fun, but controversial: some communities in Canada and the USA have restricted wake surfing, because those big waves can damage docks and shorelines, and disturb fish habitat along the lake bottom.

The Township's LSEC is publishing a series of articles on this subject in the hopes of generating some good feedback and to stimulate discussions within our community. If you want to be part of potential solutions, send your comments to lsec.boatwake@gmail.com.

The MLCA will also be publishing items dealing with the latest news and research dealing with boat wakes.

      Watch - Working For Turtles

Across eastern Georgian Bay, turtles face a perilous challenge—busy roads that cut through their habitats. In response, First Nations, municipalities, researchers, and conservation organizations are working collaboratively to find innovative ways to balance the needs of humans with those of the species that call this region home.

This video explores how routine road maintenance in the Township of The Archipelago created an opportunity to investigate new ways to reduce road threats for turtles and inspire people from all walks of life to take part in species conservation. Learn how the turtle incubation program that began as a result of this work has led to powerful educational opportunities. Biologist Tianna Burke explains, “public [turtle] releases are a great time to show the magic of turtles and to connect people to nature in a way that gives them memories, and in a way that inspires future action.”

“Working For Turtles” is one of several videos in a series highlighting inspiring examples of caretaking and conservation research happening across eastern Georgian Bay. It is part of the Georgian Bay Mnidoo Gamii Biosphere’s “State of the Bay” program that brings together multiple sources of information to communicate environmental changes in eastern Georgian Bay or Mnidoo-gamii, Great Lake of the Spirit.
