Municipal Voting Registration Changes

Elections Ontario has taken over the maintenance of the voters' list.  Therefore, the address on your drivers licence (or other Ontario id) will be your primary address and will likely populate into the voters' list automatically.  The address of any other property you own will not likely go into the system - you must enter it yourself. The deadline is August 12.  After August 12, you can register through the McKellar Township Office.

Register or Check Here

Have your id ready - first step is to verify your primary address.  Then you can add an extra property.

A new Tartan from Wave Fibre Mill

April 6th, is official Tartan Day, an appropriate day to celebrate plaid. Nina Iglesias worked in collaboration with each section of the mill to create a new seasonal tartan, made to detailed specifications. The 'Spring Marsh Tartan' is woven from naturally dyed yarn. The yarn is spun from North Country Cheviot fibre sourced from Dunchurch. The yarn has been dyed with Indigo, Tansy, Walnut, Orange Cosmos, and Madder Root. The yardage is 31" wide and they may still have some.

Editors Note:  All natural, beautiful, and inspired by the Earth.

Get Ready to Prune

As the snow vanishes and the buds swell, it’s time to prune many of our trees, shrubs, and vines. Clean and sharpen your pruning tools and remove deadwood, broken branches, and branches that are rubbing together. To avoid spreading diseases, sanitize your pruners with alcohol between trees.

Most fruit trees and shrubs can also be pruned for shape and airflow now, before their leaf buds open. They bloom on new growth, so your pruning will help concentrate their energy without reducing their productivity. To learn more, I recommend the Ontario resource Orchard People.

However, trees and shrubs that bloom on last year’s growth should not be shaped yet, since they’ve already made their flower buds. These include lilacs, willows, forsythia, dogwoods, spicebush, and spring-blooming witch-hazel, among others. If in doubt, look it up!

One thing you CAN prune now is your Hydrangea paniculata. For a hydrangea deep-dive, check out our interview with C.L. Fornari, author of Hydrangea Happiness.

CALLING ALL CRAFTY & FIX-IT PEOPLE

Hate seeing good items go to the landfill? Love to extend the life of items? We are looking for volunteer 'fixers' to help at Repair Cafes!

Fixer Kelly said: "This has been such a rewarding event series. I love making a difference by keeping things out of landfills and helping people gain new skills. It's fun to hear the stories behind the things that are brought in, and I enjoy the challenge and creativity in finding a way to fix them."

There is no expectation for volunteers to be ‘experts’ or to guarantee fixes.

Please email us at info@georgianbaybiosphere.com or give us a call at 705.774.0978

Editors Note:  The MLCA applauds the work of the GBB and our McKellar Public Library for hosting one of last year's Repair Cafes in McKellar.  We are excited to work with the Library in the planning of McKellar's next Cafe in the Fall.
