Reviewing Local Artists

by Mary Jane Gomes

Bert Weir

1925 – 2018

For over 70 years, Bert Weir created dramatic impressionistic paintings of the landscape he so loved. In 1974 Bert and Elena Zebrauskaite-Weir converted an old church into studios/gallery that became a hub for the arts in Parry Sound. After Elena’s passing, Bert married Joy Allan. The two set up home and studio in McKellar, where Bert painted, to his last day.

Sun Dappled Saplings

I grew up next door to Bert in Windsor, spending hours amongst the paintings in his studio. I recall Bert calling me out after a rain, to see the “rainbow of greens”.

Bert dedicated his life to painting interconnections within our Northern Ontario environment: a study of the spirit of the land. In all seasons and weather, Bert painted in the bush around Parry Sound, on the waters of Georgian Bay, on rocks and fields here on the Canadian Shield. You can feel the light he captured, the movement of the wind surrounding the trees and crossing open water. Bert’s passion was to render that in colour and form.

Watching Bert paint taught me to see through the eyes of an artist.

Bert’s work is in the Canada Council Art Bank, corporate and private collections, documenting his six-decade career.

Healthy Shorelines

            Waterfront Properties

with Healthy Shorelines

are more valuable

Heal Clear Cutting:

Shoreline Trees & Shrubs absorb runoff, shade buildings, act as habitat for wildlife and frame buildings making them appear more picturesque.

If you need to see the lake more, practice "vista pruning" where one only removes limbs that are blocking the view.

Living Edge:

An edging of plants along your shoreline prevents water foul from gathering & defecating, which is a source of E. Coli contamination.  Native plants filter phosphate run off and contribute to a productive eco system.

Re-imagine Swimming:

Typically, natural Ontario waterfronts are a combination of trees, rocks, natural riparian and wetland entry points, very few natural beaches exist. If you already have a beach, enjoy it, reduce it and  remember - naturally curved edges bordered by plant life is far more attractive and realistic,  than large, squared blocks of shipped in, E.Coli retaining sand.

Float Your Boat:

Docks with cribbing and piers have lost favourability and folks are moving toward floating docks that DO NOT utilize blue styrofoam

(styrofoam floats are now banned)

Turn your guilt into carbon offsetting:

Fossil fuelled watercraft are without doubt the largest contributors of carbon gas emissions.

Until the day comes when electric boats become mainstream, commit to offsetting practices to balance out your carbon footprint.

 Local Trail

Walk the Balsam Trail

The trail is rugged in spots, crosses a creek, enters into meadow lands and exposes the ghostly remains of - long abandoned Farmer's utility vehicles.
You also cross a meadow and hike up along farm land, eventually meeting up with Hwy 124, where you can have someone pick you up, or opt to turnaround and return along the route and back to the parking lot off Balsam Road.
