Muskoka Mermaids

Darlene Sweetman

Reviewing Local Artists

by Mary Jane Gomes

Darlene has spent her summers on Tait’s Island, where along the shores of Lake Manitouwabing she enjoyed the sight of a mermaid, fashioned by an artist.  Eventually the mermaid fell apart and in hearing of Darlene’s venture to fashion her own, the artist got in touch and her son eventually fixed the original.

Darlene’s desire to “have a mermaid” drove her to find a course in fashioning textile sculptures.

Darlene works with fabric and a substance used to shape it.  Once soaked, she fashions the fabric over an armature “packed with something” that then must cure for several hours.  Painting her sculpture follows, then shellacking it, a number of times.   The result is a full-bodied sculpture, tail fashioned with many circles to resemble the scales, and a mop or roving wool for hair.  She has chosen a bronze like finish in the base material that shows through her resulting sculpture.

Darlene’s incentive for developing her mermaid into an enterprise came as an offer from a resident on the lake.  Before that she was intent on retaining her original creation, but after decided to make another.  Darlene:  “The only thing that I asked, is that he keep it on the lake!”

GO FISHING!

                         Fishing Know How

The Outdoors Card which costs less than $10, is simply a plastic wallet sized card, valid for three years that the Ministry uses for administration purposes. You carry it, in addition to any fishing or hunting licences you have.

There are two types of recreational fishing licences.

Sport fishing for anglers who want full catch and possession fishing privileges - limit of 4 fish at a time.

Conservation Fishing;  live release, reduced catch limit. Both types can be purchased at a day rate, one year or three year time allotments.

Veterans, Indigenous Persons, those under 18 or over 65 and some disabilities (like CNIB identify card holders) don’t need to purchase fishing licences. But those who do need them can carry a print out or copy receipt of the licence, digitally to their phones.

Check out Ontario Tips for Catch and Release Conservation and a Best Practices video from BC.

NO FISHING LICENCE REQUIRED
